SpeechEasy Device Upgraded to Include 2nd Memory Option
Upgrade affects all orders received starting February 15, 2006
We are pleased to announce that as of February 15, 2006, all orders of the SpeechEasy device will include the second memory option as a standard feature.
This means we can now eliminate the 2nd memory option cost of $200. In addition, ITC and BTE devices will have the 2nd memory push button added. CIC devices will come with a 2nd memory internal (hidden) switch that can be adjusted through the use of a small magnetic wand.
Background
The decision to include the 2nd Memory Option was made after reports of improved comfort experienced by users currently selecting this option on ITCs, as well as in direct response from a study we conducted with current CIC users last year. We found that by setting the delay and frequency shift to 0/0 on memory two, the user can allow sounds to pass through the device instead of altering it with a delay and frequency shift. When a client is not speaking, changing the device to this second memory setting (and hence no altered feedback) can help to reduce the constant distraction of background noise. Please understand this feature is not intended to remedy the issue of background noise, but simply has the ability to make the device more comfortable in non-speaking situations.
Even though we are removing the altered feedback from the device to facilitate more normal listening, the device still does not and cannot function as a hearing aid. We have performed due diligence on this topic by checking with ASHA, FDA documentation, and leaders within the professional community. Although SpeechEasy is solely a speech product and we have conducted this research, we take great care to not even imply that the device can compensate for impaired hearing.
Order and Delivery
New Order Forms have been distributed reflecting this change to all SpeechEasy providers.. The option cost for the 2nd memory button has been removed. The default memory on the ITC and BTE will remain the external push button. The default memory switch on the CIC will be an internal magnetic switch activated by a magnet.
When purchased, a CIC user will receive 2 magnetic wands with their order. Additional wands can be purchased for $5 plus shipping through Janus. The option of adding a VC is still an option with this standard CIC configuration. It will be possible to special request a push button switch on the CIC. The difficulty may come in trying to place one's finger in the ear to switch the settings. If you choose the external push button memory switch for the CIC, a volume control cannot be added.
Existing Clients
For clients that did not order the second memory but would like to add it now, we will offer to retro fit the second memory switch on those devices for $200, and the option will be processed as a normal repair transaction.
*There is always the remote possibility a feature will not fit depending on the size of the device and clients ear. Those instances will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
