Janus to Move Forward with SpeechEasy Foundation in 2007

The question of "Can I donate my device?" is frequently asked regarding SpeechEasy. Often, family members will have possession of a device, and their intention is to recycle it so that someone else can share in the benefits of the SpeechEasy.

Janus is working to create a non-profit - either from the ground up or through an alliance with an existing non-profit - to help facilitate the process associated with assessing, refurbishing and recycling devices that can then be donated and placed with families in need. We know this can be a very powerful effort, and we want to assist in the creation of a system that will best provide this service to our community. We are also coming to you for help. The following are our initial thoughts as to how this foundation may work. If you, or someone you know, has experience with non-profit organizations or foundations and would like to help, please contact us! We'd love to talk with you about it.

Our hope is to have an application process in place for anyone interested in obtaining a refurbished device. Only those who have been evaluated for the device and have shown favorable results will be considered. Applications will be available through the providing SLPs conducting the evaluation.

Our thought is anyone who makes a donation will receive a tax deduction for their contribution, as well as receiving the goodwill associated with helping someone who otherwise could not afford a device. The non-profit association will also be responsible for accepting applications.

We are excited at the possibility of creating yet another way for people seeking enhanced fluency to receive a SpeechEasy device, and we look forward to bringing you more news in the New Year as this idea becomes a reality.
