SpeechEasy Maintenance-Extending the Life of Your Device
Acquiring a SpeecyEasy device requires a significant financial investment. Therefore, it is important to maximize that investment by performing key maintenance functions which keep your device operating in top form for years to come.
Begin by cleaning your device on a daily basis as outlined in your Care and Maintenance Manual. If you make cleaning your device a routine each night when you remove it, you will enhance the ease of use for your device for a long-term basis.
To start, visually examine your device for any wax accumulation on the plastic shell or faceplate. Use the wax brush that comes with your device to gently brush any wax or dirt away from the shell, around the battery door, microphone opening, and volume control (if you have one). Be doubly sure the brushing action is moving the dirt and wax away from these areas instead of into them. You may also want to gently wipe the shell with facial tissue to prevent any irritation to the ear canal. While you're here take some time to check for any cracks, chips or other problems that may need addressing.
Once you have cleaned the external areas of your SpeechEasy, open the red or blue wax door and check for any accumulated wax on the underside of the door. This small door is installed on most devices (size permitting) to catch wax before it has a chance to enter the sensitive internal electronics.
To clean the wax door: support the back of the door with your finger. While holding the device in a downward position to ensure that no wax or dirt falls inside the device, use the wax brush to gently brush away any wax from the door or around the speaker opening. Once clean, gently close the door until it clicks.
Your device may also be equipped with an extended receiver tube to prevent wax from entering the device. This is a white or black tube extending beyond the canal portion of the device. To clean this tube, begin by positioning the device in a downward position. Using the wire loop portion of your wax brush gently pick out any accumulated wax from inside the tube. Once completed, use the brush to loosen and remove any remaining buildup from the external portion of the receiver tube.
Finally open the battery door, remove the battery and leave your device in its drying kit overnight. This will extract any moisture that may have built up in your device during the day and will prevent corrosion from forming inside your device. When approximately ten percent of the beads in your drying pillow have turned pink you will need to "recharge" it in your microwave. To do this put only the pillow in the microwave for short thirty second bursts until approximately ten percent of the beads are blue.
If you follow these simple cleaning steps on a daily basis you will ensure that your device provides you with years of true fluency. If you have any additional questions about the cleaning and maintenance of your SpeechEasy, we encourage you to contact your SpeechEasy provider for more information.
