Stuttering Therapy

Stuttering therapy has a great influence on children who stutter. Parents and teachers that increase their understanding about the impact stuttering can have in the life of a child will benefit all concerned.  Many children experience normal disfluencies as they are learning to speak.  Sometimes they might experience developmental stuttering between the ages of 3 and 8.  If it happens only occasionally there is no need to be alarmed, however if you start to see some warning signs that stuttering is becoming frequent and consistent then you may benefit from stuttering therapy from a certified speech language pathologist.

Stuttering Help
Stuttering help is available from trained professional speech-language pathologists. There is no cure for stuttering though it may be prevented in preschoolers and young borderline children who stutter.  By identifying variables in the child’s environment that is increasing the disfluent speech, the environment may be manipulated in order to help remove stuttering triggers.

Some stuttering triggers include:

  • Feeling rushed or in competition for talking time
  • Interruptions
  • Feeling pressured to speak or to perform
  • Sibling rivalry
  • Busy environments
  • Too much or too little structure

Stuttering can be significantly increased by stress created from feelings of embarrassment, inadequacy, shame, and frustration. Fortunately, stuttering help is available along with the remarkable technological advancement of SpeechEasy fluency devices and speech-language therapy given by professional pathologists.  Most intensive fluency programs will help a person who stutters to feel more confident and to speak more fluently. The person who stutters is encouraged to continue to practice the techniques taught to them by professional speech language pathologist as often as they need in order to maintain fluency. With help and perseverance stuttering may be diminished and controllable and help a person who stutters to gain more confidence and to speak more fluently.
